Oleum (Latin oleum, meaning oil), or fuming sulfuric acid, is a term referring to solutions of various compositions of sulphur trioxide in sulfuric acid, or sometimes more specifically to disulfuric acid (also known as pyrosulfuric acid). Oleum serves as a useful way to transport sulfuric acid compounds much more safely. The lack of free water molecules in Oleum means it does not rust metals. Oleum is also used in the production of certain explosives.
